Album Info:Most of the photographs in this album were taken in Northeast Wisconsin in the summer of 2013, plus a few from other parts of the state and neighboring states. I like watching the long, high-speed, mainline, freight trains just as much as the next railfan, but I really enjoy the opportunity to photograph some of the railroads less traveled as well.

Description:  GBW 1001 located northeast of the CN, former GB&W, grade crossing at Depot St. in Manawa, WI on 2 Jun. '13. I believe the ca. 1951 cinderblock GB&W Manawa depot was located just beyond the station sign. A photo can be found at: http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/. I haven’t been able to pinpoint the location of the 1898 wood-frame depot, but I think it stood about where GBW 1001 is now. Description:  The remains of a spur along the CN, former GB&W, rails near Depot St. in Manawa, WI on 2 Jun. '13. The spur that heads into downtown curves to the left of the white building. GBW 1001 is partly visible in the background. I believe the ca. ‘51 cinderblock GB&W Manawa depot was located just beyond the station sign (right background). A photo can be found at: http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/. I haven’t been able to pinpoint the location of the 1898 wood-frame depot, but I think it stood about where GBW 1001 is now. Description:  Looking WNW along the CN, former GB&W, rails about near the intersection of W. Howard St. and Industrial Ln. in Manawa, WI on 2 Jun. '13. This is what remains of the small yard. The building on the right used to have a spur leading to it, there used to be several rail-served industries along this stretch. It seems odd that the siding rails have less rust the main line.

The white building on the right was once National Condensed Milk Co. and used to receive rail service. Description:  Looking east at Sturm Foods at the end of the spur that leads from the former GB&W mainline, now CN branch, into downtown, as seen from Bridge St., Manawa, WI on 2 Jun. '13. Sturm Foods (currently a subsidiary of TreeHouse Foods), received rail service until a couple of years ago. A disagreement between the two parties has left rail service in limbo. The facility is larger than it looks here. The small, tan, wood-frame building to the right of the spur is the old GB&W freight house, which was built in 1898 and retired by the GB&W in 1951 (http://www.greenbayroute.com/depots.htm).

Description:  SOO 247 caboose on display next to the MILW depot at Elkhart Lake, WI on 17 Jun. '13. The depot was built in 1897 in the Queen Anne style. It is now a museum and gift shop. Active WSOR rails pass in front of the depot, but they are not as heavily traveled as a rail fan would hope.

Description:  CN through freight crosses what used to be the N. Union St. grade crossing and is about to disappear behind the north side of the historic Tuttle Press Co. mill as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 13 Jul. '13. Train was enroute to Green Bay from Stevens Point and had two locomotives, CN 2608 pulling and CN 5343 pushing. The factory dates to 1905, it later operated as Artfaire and finally as Sulpaco West, Inc. For nearly a century this facility produced a variety of renowned specialty papers: napkins, table covers, tissue, craft paper, paper dolls, gift boxes, crepe paper, and especially gift wrapping paper, until Sullivan Paper Co. shuttered this plant on 27 Jun. ’02 and moved production to one of its other facilities in Mass. Since then it appears to have been used as storage for one or more local businesses. There used to be a diamond on the opposite side of the tracks and to the left, where two spurs intersected to service several industries in that block.

Description:  CN local passes the site of former interlocking tower that guarded the former junction of SOO and C&NW, now the Mountain-Bay State Trail as it switches local industry at Shawano, WI on 30 Jul. '13. The tower stood to the right of the bicyclists, south of SOO tracks and east of C&NW tracks, until it was torn down circa 1995. There are remnants of a foundation in the clump of trees in front of 1st box car, but I don’t recall what used to be there.

Description:  A pair of CN switchers work the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 18 Aug. '13. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Description:  A CN local, with a friendly engineer, passes the historic Eagle Manufacturing Co. complex, partially visible in background, as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 23 Aug. '13. Train was enroute to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Eagle Manufacturing Co., makers of gasoline engines, tractors, and other farm implements, was incorporated in Dec. 1888 in the Flats at Appleton, WI. They began construction of this new factory in 1904, after they outgrew their original facility. It shared that block with the Ideal Lumber and Coal Co. and C. D. Rowell & Son, Manufacturing, makers of car movers. Eagle erected several additions over the years until it occupied most of the block. The historic factory was demolished in late-2014/early-2015 and some wonderful new apartments or condominiums are in the final stage of construction as of Aug. ’15. There used to be a diamond on the opposite side of the locomotive, where two spurs intersected to service several industries in that block.
