NS 9778 |
Description: |
I actually took this one back in February and out of my total sickness of seeing Dash-9s I didn't even look at the photo until now then I realized this engine has a unibrow but no house head on the hood. Well I checked it out. During a trip to the engine shop the hood compartment was mistakenly switched with NS 9405. Now NS 9778 has 9405's hood compartment and if you look at more recent pictures of 9405 you'll see a horse head on a much newer engine compartment but no unibrow paint above the cab windows. |

Since they shifted part of the tracks over about 10 feet in Graniteville, this created a curve before the small trussell. Makes for an interesting shot but I feel I can do better next time I get the chance to take this shot. I never really noticed this curve til yesterday but I think next time I just need my zoom ranged in fully. One thing I can say for widecabs they do make good curve shots. |

6th Street crossbuck |
Description: |
Many of the corssbuck signs on 6th street in Augusta are unique from most. Some are on telephone poles some are on rotting post but none have warning lights and crossing bars because of the fact that the train runs down the middle of the street. Many of these signs are bent up and some I believe are even almost impossible for a motorist to see. Many tourist actually believe that the railroad is out of service and are often surprised to see the old Southern Railway line still in use. |

Old 6th street spur |
Description: |
The spur line that comes off the sixth street trackage in Augusta GA is no longer used. I don't know how long it's been but this spur used to go Hamburg SC, the depot and something else up along the river. Hamburg was destroyed by the 1929 flood and is completely whipped out. In fact the only thing I heard was still standing was a creepy building beside the 5th street bridge. I believe this was originally a switch track to the Hamburg line which lead to a trussell that paralleled the one known as the sixth street trussell. The supports of the Hamburg trussell can still be seen poking out the river next to the fifth street bridge. After Hamburg this spur line was more than likely used to access the depot and possibly some business paralleling the river. Probably used by Central of Georgia. This spur line cuts across the eastbound lane of sixth street but dead ends because most of the trackage was taken up, except the part of the trackage that crosses the museum parking lot but that's totally for display. The switch and most of the tracks were removed recently I believe as 2006. |

NS 9179 |
Description: |
So as I was shooting the street running in Augusta GA this one idiot decided he didn't have to wait for the train to clear before parking his car at ST Paul Episcopal church. So to save him some time he pulls down this narrow stretch of sixth street where people are walking and there's a train going down the middle. With the train coming there is not enough room for him to squeeze between it and parked cars so he goes up the middle. The train is coming off the levee at about 5mph. The engineer is blowing the horn like crazy because even though he's going slow there's no way he can stop from hitting them. The car stops to make the turn but the people walking were slowing him down. As I turned for this shot the car had just turned off the tracks but is still too close to the train and can't move because of pedestrians. So this means if they try to move very fast now they hit the pedestrian but if they don't they get clipped by the train. They were lucky the train was going only 5mph or somebody would have got hurt. The Car was able to move just a few seconds before the train made it there. Pretty stupid because I don't think anybody would have taken that spot while the train was there, it really could have waited. |

A railfan's nightmare almost come true |
Description: |
This set of three shots gives you a time line of what I saw unfold today and I thought this one was going to be ugly but luckily this train wasn't going the track speed limit of 45mph and I'm afraid if it was this kid would have been killed. All the times came off my camera's memory and were taken from the properties of the pictures. He crossed this private crossing and stopped in the middle of the tracks then crossed into a private driveway, then in shot #2 crossed the tracks again and 180ed back around into the driveway. In the 1st shot you can make out the distance of the train but on the 3nd shot I couldn't get the angle on the kid with the zoom. Mainly because I was nervous out of my mind and yelling at the kid, so I kind of shook #2 off. Needless to say I was able to inform his parents and he is in big trouble. But I wanted to use this time interval as an example to show how close this incident could have been if the train was going 45mph. This just goes to shows how close today's train photos were to going to the police as evidence instead of this gallery. If this kid had gotten hit I would have never posted it. |

51 Miles from Charleston |
Description: |
This is all that is left of the old Charleston to Hamburg line built in 1833 and at one time was the longest mainline in the world. Mile Marker 51 is the end of the line everything back from 51 is only used by NS as an industrial line where only NS P22 may go once a week. Just off of US Highway 78 after passing Mile marker 51 you can see signs of what this used to be such as high roadbeds, old crossbuck signs, track imprints in roads, and narrow paths between trees. US.78 parallels the line and if you follow it to Branchville you'll see it come to life again because a line from Columbia to Charleston hooks onto it. This line has been closed since the mid 80's but I can't get an exact date. Some of the track here was there last time I was there around 2004, but they've removed that since then I was only able to find some remains but nothing like spikes, maybe a piece of wood leftover but that's all I found. Norfolk Southern still owns the lease to the land. |

Guarding for what never comes |
Description: |
Long gone since the 80's but I think this crossing was last used in the 90's possibly it still has it's report stalled vehicle sign with the previous NS stripe logo and down highway 78 from time to time you'll see old signs like this left up along the way with no tracks. I was really looking for some old SOU signs but couldn't find many. The thing is Norfolk Southern still owns the lease to the land so I don't know if they ever intend to do anything with it. |

Once was a railroad |
Description: |
The tunnel between the trees and the granted rocks on the ground are the only thing that reminds you that a train once went though here. It's been more than 20 years since the last train, but you can still see that space that makes up a right of way. I'd like to do some searching here if I can get a metal detector, and see if I can't find some old spikes or maybe old signs I'm pretty sure there still something made made of metal somewhere over there. |

Some Active trackage |
Description: |
This was all taken before mile marker 51 which marks the end of the line now days. This track hardly sees a train anymore and when it does it's normally local P22 and I think it comes through here once a week at the most but if I can ever get lucky to catch it out here one day that would be nice. The track isn't in the best condition but I guess it serves it's small modern purpose now days. Back in 1833 when this line first opened the best friend of Charleston operated on this line but now it is only used as a spur line for companies that need the railroad and you've probably seen in a more recent post that the line ends at mile marker 51 which is where it has ended since the 1980's. |

The avondale spur |
Description: |
This was the same spur line that was involved with the Grantieville train wreck but this isn't at the location of the wreck. This is a little further down the spur line. The mill has only been closed since 2006 because of damage from the chlorine from train wreck. Nobody has bought it and it's now starting to show signs of decay in some places. |
