Title:  Rare ATSF 4-4-6-2 #1300 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Description:  So rare is this unusual 4-4-6-2 wheel configuration for a "compound Mallet" that the RRPA data base had no classification for it. Built by Baldwin in August of 1909 as one of two for the ATSF, the oil burning loco and its sister had an oddball combination of dead-end variants in its feed water heater, combustion chamber, and superheater which were compromised by other design elements. After unsuccesfully working in both passengeer and freight service, the pair were converted to a more conventional 4-6-2 in August of 1915 (#1300) and October of 1915 (#1301), thus ending this oddball configuration. Original specs - serial #33708, class 1300, 73" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 24x28" high pressure cylinders, 38x28" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 376,450 lb and tractive effort of 53,697 lb.

Title:  ATSF 4-4-2 #1485
Description:  This appears to be a reprint due to the image quality, possibly a photo positive of a builder's photo. Built by Baldwin in 1910, the class had the nickname of "Bull Moosers" due to the unusual domes and piping. According to the American Engineer & RR Journal "A somewhat startling arrangement of steam pipes is a prominent feature in the design, and is clearly indicated in the accompanying illustration. The steam is taken from the boiler at the rear dome and through two 5 in. pipes carried to the forward dome in which the throttle valve is located." Also noteworthy is the three equal-sized domes on the boiler, the central one was the sand dome and the two flanking domes held steam, the reverse of the usual layout. Note that another steam pipe emerged near the smokebox on either side after passing through a smokebox reheater that measured 1,147 sq ft in area; this pipe entered the outside low-pressure cylinders. Description:  Bulilt by Burnham, Wms & Company (Baldwin predecessor) in December of 1901, this 2-8-0 Consolidation was part of a very large group of Consolidations that ATSF used mostly at first for passenger service. Specs - serial #19875, class 789, 57" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 17x32" high pressure cylinders, 28x32" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 202,360 lb, tractive effort of 42,321 lb. The entire 789 class of Vauclain compound locomotives was simplified starting in 1912. Retirements started in late 1930's and continued for nearly 20 years. The photo is from the collection of John B. McCall and no date or location was given. With Mike Woodruff's help (see comment below), the location seems to fit Redlands,CA. Description:  Built by Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin) in 1902, this is the unique sole member of class 824. According to SteamLocomotive.com "This Vauclain compound is notable for the large number of tubes it had stuffed in its boiler and their relatively small diameter and length; both were characteristic of the Vanderbilt boiler. This variant was still more unusual, however, in that the firebox was subdivided into three separate corrugated furnaces. Each of the fireboxes measured 32" in diameter and 86" long connected to the rear plate of the combustion chamber and the back head. Just inside the back plate of each of these flues was a trapezoidal firebrick structure described as an "obstruction to the flame". The combustion chamber supplied a critical 70 sq ft to the firebox heating surface area. Another weird feature is the grate area, which is expressed as "3 flues 3 1/2" x 7'" and appears to refer to the oil burner's nozzle layout. After being simpled within a decade of its introduction, the lone 824 was converted to an 0-8-0 switcher in 1937" using boiler from 1404 (BLW s/n 26153). Description:  Built by Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin) in 1903, this was the first Pacific for Santa Fe. It was their class 1200 and had 69" drivers, generated an impressive boiler pressure of 220 psi for its compound 22.5"x28" cylinders. The engine weight was 214,600 lb and it could produce a tractive effort of 38,416 lb. Later it was rebuilt by the Santa Fe shops with 79" drivers, simplified and superheated. Description:  After a failed experiment with a 4-4-6-2, the Santa Fe shops rebuilt one into two Pacifics in 1915 as a new class 1398. Each Pacific had 73" drivers, could generate a boiler pressure of 200 psi for its 23.5"x28" cylinders. The engine weight of 269,390 lb and a tractive effort of 36,010 lb. Description:  This "Mountain"-type steam locomotive was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1919 . It was an ATSF class 3700 loco with tall 69" drivers, developed a boiler pressure of 200 psi, and created a respectable 54,085 lb of tractive effort . This was the answer to handle the increasingly longer passenger trains that the earlier 4-6-2 Pacifics couldn't do. After serving the ATSF for over 30 years, the class was retired between 1950-55. Description:  According to Steamlocomotive.com website, this 1930 Baldwin built, 502,600 pound "Texas" type locomotive convinced the Santa Fe of the power the 2-10-4 could supply. It had 69" dia. drivers which were larger than most freight motive power at the time. From the very beginning, number 5000 was nicknamed "Madam Queen" and proved the value of the four-wheel trailing truck and high drivers on 2-10-4s which led the AT&SF to order 35 of them starting in 1938. "Madam Queen" operated heavy freight and ran up 1,700,000 miles before it was retired in 1953. She was donated to the City of Amarillo, Texas by the AT&SF in 1957 but received little upkeep and was deteriorating badly when, in 1992, a small group of railroad enthusiasts formed the Texas Panhandle Railroad Historical Society of Amarillo, Texas. They, with the aid of the City of Amarillo, undertook a project to restore number 5000. The cosmetic restoration was completed in the summer of 1996 and the society continues to maintain the locomotive. This one-of-a-kind locomotive is on display at the Santa Fe Park near the AT&SF Depot in Amarillo, TX. Date is approximate - no photographer listed for this fine photo.

Description:  This is the first Santa Fe to wear the number 684 - later it would be a Dash9-44CW unit. This loco was built by Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin) in 1898 as one of the very first Baldwin built Pacifics iwth cast steel frames. It had small 57" drivers generated a boiler pressure of 180 psi for its 21"x28" cyldinders.The engine weight was a modest 156,130 lb and it could produce a tractive effort of 33,145 lb. Here it sits in the Topeka yard waiting for a new assignment. No photographer was identified.
