CB&Q E9 9988B
Title:  CB&Q E9 9988B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 242 and E9 9988B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 30, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The GP7 is leading the East End Way Freight east, having finished switching the industries on both sides of the tracks in Naperville. Since the way freight occupies Track 3, the Dinky is on Track 2, and the commuters were briefly the main ingredient in a train sandwich at the station seen in the background. The Dinky is overtaking the way freight but will stop at Lisle, four miles further east, allowing the way freight to catch up. This will continue until Downers Grove, a likely stopping point for the way freight to perform a few more switching duties usually at Pepperidge Farm.

CB&Q E9 9988B
Title:  CB&Q E9 9988B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9988B eastbound in the fog at Aurora, Illinois on December 23, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler

There is some risk in me taking this photo. I'm on the wrong side of the tracks. It's close to Christmas on this photo date, and I've treated myself to a ride on the Oregon Way Freight, which will expect to pick me up from the platform seen in the background. But this train was sitting in the station on that platform. It appeared to be an Extra or Section of a regular train, so I crossed over to snap this photo. I crossed back to the platform, and stayed out of trouble this time. But later I managed to piss off the Conductor of the way freight by over-stoking a pot-belly stove (it was glowing red) in the baggage section of the Combine #3003, which served as the waycar (caboose) and as accommodations for local passengers between Aurora and Oregon, Illinois. He let me hang out of the baggage door, and I wasted his fuel and gave him cause for concern, besides making him process a Passenger Ticket, which required an Extra Report. I always got curious looks from the ticket agents at Aurora when I asked for a round trip ticket to Oregon, but didn't want to ride the Zephyr. Apparently this required the agent to call the tower and have them set up a signal (lunar, I think) to let the way freight know they had a passenger. I was a pain in the butt to all involved on the last mixed train out of Eola.

CB&Q E9 9988B
Title:  CB&Q E9 9988B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9988B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 10, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9988B was built in January 1956 ( c/n 20540 ), one of the last E-units delivered to the Burlington. Sometime after March 2, 1970, it became BN 9983, a number it held for about two years. During August 1972, the BN's suburban properties, including E-units and rolling stock, were transferred to the West Suburban Mass Transit District ( WSMTD ) and were leased back to the BN for operation and maintenance. The E-units were shipped of to Morrison-Knudsen in Boise, Idaho for rebuilding, and 9988B became 9913 in September 1973. In July 1992 the E-units were retired, and 9913 went on to serve on the Spirit of Tennessee Train as number 1996. At the end of that train's tour, the 9913 was purchased by the Gold Coast Railroad Museum in Miami, Florida where it resides today painted as CB&Q 9913.

CB&Q E9 9988B
Title:  CB&Q E9 9988B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9988B at the head end of the North Coast Limited in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on an unknown day in April 1965, Anscochrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. This is a slide I purchased in a hobby shop for 25 cents. It is hand labeled; 'North Coast Limited In Milwaukee During Flooding Of Mississippi River'. The date stamped on the slide mount is APR 65. I have a slide of an abbreviated Twin Cities Zephyr that I shot in Naperville, Illinois on April 19, 1965 with the same notation. The rules and agreements governing a train from another railroad require that a CB&Q crew operate the train under the supervision of a pilot from the host railroad. In this case, the CB&Q would need to transport relief CB&Q crews from their home base to locations on the Milwaukee Road where crew changes took place. If the detours needed to operate for an extended period of time, the CB&Q would put their crews up in local hotels for the duration of the detour operation. Needless to say, an expensive way to run a railroad.

CB&Q E9 9988B
Title:  CB&Q E9 9988B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9988B westbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 25, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in January 1956 (c/n 20540) on EMD Order 2071A, this was one of ten E9's (#'s 9985A,B - 9989A,B) ordered by the CB&Q in 1955, which turned out to be the Q's last order of E-units. This unit became BN 9983, was rebuilt to E9Am 9913, was retired in 1992, and moved on to other careers.

It is seen here on what may be Train #229, a Saturday and Sunday Only Every Stop train, bringing a westbound two car Dinky into Naperville at around 7:25 PM on a Sunday evening with the help of two more E's, and leaving a trail of fresh brake shoe smoke. The practice at the time was to run the E's back to Chicago after rush hour on Friday evening, service and rotate them into Zephyr service, take the E's in Zephyr service and rotate them into suburban service, and on Sunday evening run the E's out to Aurora for Monday morning's rush hour. This particular unit was reputed to have taken a two car Dinky up to 100 mph after leaving Naperville before ducking under the EJ&E bridge at Eola, a distance of roughly five miles. This, of course, was a bit over the 75 mph speed limit in that territory. Chasing the Dinky into town this day is a freight, seen in the smoky background.
