During a 1948 rail fan trip, this Monon 2-8-2 #514 and its sister behind, get a sad review by the fans as they sat in the scrap line. Built by Alco-Brooks in August of 1912, it served well in both passenger and eventually freight service for nearly 36 years before being sold for scrap in August of 1948, just a couple months after this photo was taken. . Specs as built - serial #51663, class J-1, 63" drivers, 170 psi boiler pressure, 28x30" cylinders, engine weight of 286,000 lb, tractive effort of 53,900 lb. The loco was rebuilt by the CIL Lafayette shops and raised the boiler pressure to 185 psi which increased the tractive effort ot 56,800 lb. No exact day in 1948 was given. Tarbell photo |
