Named after a brave security guard killed trying to prevent 7 armed robbers from robbing a payroll at British Rail Engineering in 1973. Despite having been beaten savagely about the head, he continued to tackle the robbers finally being shot twice by a shotgun. All 7 robbers were subsequently arrested, tried and jailed. IN 1975, two years after the robbery, James Kennedy received the highest honour for civilian bravery, the George Cross posthumously.
