Here is a rare view of the locomotive, Denver & Salt Lake 2-8-2 Mikado #406, built by Lima in 1915. Originally built specifically for the Rollins Pass route, the Mikados had problems negotiating the curving alignment and slipped because of their power, according to Drury (1993). Still they ran until the late 1940s and even received Coffin feedwater heaters as seen in the photo. Barely a few months from this photo, the loco was sold to the DRGW and renumbered 1226. It was retired and scrapped by the DRGW in April of 1952. Specs - serial #5706, class K-63, 55" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 26x30" cylinders, engine weight of 295,000 lb, tractive effort of 62,684 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo. |
