I would assume the red is the base paint and the yellow and grey just go over it, but I'm not an expert on this kind of thing haha.

Usually, striped colors get sprayed on in a wide swath, and then taped, then the more prominent colors get sprayed on, tape is peeled off and the stripe is left. As the paint fades, ages and wears, the prominent colors have a tendency to peel, revealing the stripe color. Guilford's BM690 is a prime example of a stripe growing...
