Currently the only locomotive on home rails on this former D&H branch, this old Alco was built for the D&H in 1963 as part of an order of twelve units. Operating in freight service for its original owner, this was one of the last RS-36 units to see service for the D&H. Later acquired by its current owner, Southwind Rail Travel Limited, the historic locomotive operated at various shortlines, including the Lackawanna Valley, Delaware Lackawanna, and Northern Central. It even was leased to the MBTA of Boston in the late 1990s for a track rebuilding project. Last operated by the Upper Hudson River Railroad, the unit awaits a possible future restoration back to operating condition. It sure would be cool to see this thing plying the rails through the Adirondacks once again. |
