Excellent example of a 1918 PRR Altoona Shops built 2-8-2 Mikado caught at the 28th Street yard in Pittsburgh by an unknown photographer. A long-time PRR engineer claimed in the mid-1920s "the best all-purpose locomotive that had been developed thus far [on the Pennsy] was the L1s. It could run fast, steam easily, ride well, and, despite its rather large size for a Mikado, it was economical to operate." Specs - L1s class, 62" drivers, 204.5 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 315,000 lb, tractive effort of 61,315 lb. |
