It's mid-afternoon and Louisville & Nashville J3 Mikado 1518 is pulling train No. 7 -- the all-stops local from Montgomery -- along the Mississippi River wharves and into the railroad's Canal Street Station. The 1518 was one of 93 USRA (United States Railroad Administration) light 2-8-2's on the L&N and the first of 65 built for the railroad by Alco between 1920 and 1923. J3's were the heaviest steam locomotives operated into New Orleans by the L&N. The 1518 was retired on 29 January 1952. Train No. 7 was officially dieselized -- with FP7A's -- on 27 July 1951 and was discontinued in September 1953. (approximate date) |
