Actually this was pretty common on the old N&W(and Southern); long hood forward was the way they rolled, even with the new GE's with the wide radiators. Trains would come east from Crewe with three units up front-upshers were unheard of on this part of the railroad-often with 200 plus cars for the coal pier.
