CR 4800, GG-1, 1976 |
Description: |
Old Rivets. Here is a postal card entitled "'Ol' Rivets' gussied-up for Bicentennial." No Postmark. Caption On Reverse: "Called 'Ol' Rivets' because she was the first GG-1 built by the Pennsylvania RR, and the only one with riveted seams. Designer Raymond Loewy called for smooth, welded seams in the subsequent 139 copies. This view is from 1976. She now resides, wearing dignified vintage paint, in a proper museum." The photographer is not identified. #4800 is a GG-1 (2-C-C-2) built by General Electric as number "4899" during August of 1934, renumbered "4800" in November of 1934, rated at 4,620 horsepower, and now at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. |

7 units on point |
Description: |
This was an unusual lash-up, for sure. There were seven locomotives on point, including two B units. I think this was probably part of a locomotive repositioning, as I am pretty sure only the first few were under power and a grain train which usually only requires two to three locomotives certainly didn't need seven. |

PRR "World's Fastest Locomotive," E-7SA, 1949 |
Description: |
Here is a postal card entitled "World's Fastest Locomotive. Pennsylvania Railroad's No. 7002 ~ Record 127.1 Miles an Hour. Chicago Railroad Fair 1949.'" No Postmark. Caption On Reverse: "The world's fastest run by a railroad train was made by the 'Broadway Limited' of the Pennsylvania Railroad on Monday, June 12,1905, when it ran 127.1 miles an hour between AY Tower and Elida, Ohio. The 'Broadway Limited' was pulled by coal-burning steam Locomotive 7002 ~ and although many swift runs have been made in recent years by steam, electric, and diesel locomotives, none has equalled the 127.1 mile-an-hour record established in 1905. At the Chicago Railroad Fair of 1949, Locomotive 7002 stands on a section of P.R.R. standard roadbed with rails weighing 155 pounds to the yard ~ heaviest in the world." The photographer is not identified. This #7002 is an E-7SA (4-4-2) "Atlantic" built in Juniata as E-2A number "8063" during 1902, rebuilt as an E-7SA in October of 1918, withdrawn from service in August of 1939, renumbered "7002" in June of 1949, and presently on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. |

BNSF Boeing 737 fuselage train |
Description: |
The fuselage sections for the Boeing 737 are made in Wichita, Kansas and shipped in one piece to the 737 final assembly building in Renton, Washington. This middle fuselage in this train had no windows, so it was either a freighter version or a military version for the Australian military called a Wedgetail, which is a mini-AWACS aircraft. I'm not sure which. There wasn't a cargo door in side so maybe it was the military version. |
