At the time, the SD 50 was not one of them, the leader of an OIBU posed in front of the real classics. Beyond the engine, we see the tower of the DLW station, now privately owned and in good shape. To the left of the station is one of the Marconi transmission towers, dating to 1913 when wireless radio was still experimental. The SD 50 was common then. Now, in 2018, there are not many still running in America. |

The NYSW ran excursions for the annual Marathon Maple Festival, starting with a run down from Cortland. Mikado 142 was the star of the train for several years. In 1993, it was brutally cold and snowy-there had been a 20 plus inch snowfall a week earlier-even for the festival, which was notorious for its awful weather. While it made for a challenging chase, steam in the snow made for a great show. |

Several places along I 81 provide good views of the tracks, though I dont recommend sitting on the side of the interstate to do this. Its a violation of the Vehicle and Traffic Law for one thing, and not terribly safe for another. Nevertheless, a shot of a steam train was too much to resist, so we have this shot of the Maple Festival train near Messengerville, seen from the shoulder of I 81. |

Whitcomb Locomotive #9 - BC Forest Discovery Centre |
| Description: |
Safely tucked away in the engine shed is this ex-Army Whitcomb locomotive built in 1943. The unit was to be shipped to Africa during WWII but the turn of victories stopped the shipmnet. It was purchased in 1956 for use at a pulp mill. Eventually retired and donated to the museum. Specs - 80 ton, (80-DE-7-B), 0-4-4-0, double power diesel electric Buda Model engines, 2 Westinghouse Model 197-A generators, tractive effort of 53,330 lb, max speed 40 mph. Rebuilt with Caterpillar 353's. |
