Shawnigan Lake Lumber Co Climax #2
Title:  Shawnigan Lake Lumber Co Climax #2
Description:  On display inside the BC Forest Discovery Centre is this 1910 2-truck Climax beautifully restored after years of hard work in the logging industry in British Columbia and neglect when the lumber company abandoned it in the woods. Duncan resident Granger Taylor plowed a road through one-half mile of forest to rescue it in 1969 and after that, it began the long restoration process with the final loco ending up in the BC Forest Discovery Centre.

Hillcrest Lumber Co Cimax #9
Title:  Hillcrest Lumber Co Cimax #9
Description:  This 1915 Climax (serial #1359) holds a very special place at the BC Forest Discovery Centre. As the only operational (authentic) Climax in Canada, and one of a very few in the world, No.9 is a rare locomotive. Eventually retired in 1968, it was donated to the Cowichan Valley Forest Museum, now the BC Forest Discovery Centre.

Title:  Crew Speeder #27 - Forest BC Discovery Centre
Description:  Built as a replica in the 1970's as an example of the typical logging crew speeder used in British Columbia, this little unit provides the visitors to the BC Forest Discovery Centre an awesome ride through the forest, over a small trestle past the Somenos Lake and past the various logging displays.

Crew Speeder #27 - Forest BC Discovery Centre
Title:  Crew Speeder #27 - Forest BC Discovery Centre
Description:  Emerging from the green forest, the yellow crew speeder rolls into the bright spring daylight at the BC Forest Discovery Centre. Many logging speeders were built to Department of Railway standards at the company repair shop, by the camp master mechanic. While most service was as a railway bus (crummy) and ambulance, some also worked as light locomotives.

Crew Speeder #27 - Forest BC Discovery Centre
Title:  Crew Speeder #27 - Forest BC Discovery Centre
Description:  Although a replica built in the 1970's, it is an accurate model of the working crew speeders that hauled the loggers to their day's location in the forest. Capable of speeds of up to 45 miles per hour, they were much faster and more comfortable than hitching a ride with the usually slow moving log trains.

Crew Speeder #27 - Forest BC Discovery Centre
Title:  Crew Speeder #27 - Forest BC Discovery Centre
Description:  Although an odd-shaped speeder, it nonetheless served the logging crews well as their means of transportation to and from their worksite. In the case of the more remote camps, they also transported workers and their families between camp and town. Now it serves the tourists as a way to view the Centre's displays spread around the forest.
