PRR East Altoona Roundhouse, 1965 |
Description: |
Roundhouse. Here is an original telephoto view that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad property in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 April 1965. Shown here is PRR engine #7924, an ES-12 built by EMD in 1957 and rated at 1,200 horsepower. It is shifting another unit (whose number is not visible) into the East Altoona Roundhouse, which is now used for light-duty maintenance of Diesels. Note all of the weeds that now occupy the space where steam locomotives were once maintained 24/7/365! |

Scruggs Company |
Description: |
At the present, the Georgia DOT is widening Interstate 75 though South Georgia, including the Lenox area. The preferred base in a concrete or asphalt paved road is graded aggregate. However, Georgia has no rock quarries south of Macon, 150 miles to the north of here. Therefore, the road construction contractors have been running unit trains of crushed rock over Norfolk Southern's GS&F to sites like these, where it is stockpiled for dump trucks to take to the construction site |

Yard Work. Here is an original photo that I took of Penn Central Railroad yard operations in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, in August of 1972. Shown here is PC engine #9020, an SW-1200 built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division in 1957 and rated at 1,200 horsepower. It is shifting a gondola car at the eastern end of the Westbound Hump at the base of Bald Hill, next to US Route 22. In the days of the Pennsylvania Railroad, this engine was numbered "7920"; builder's number: 24152. |

In this artsy-shot using the rear-view mirror of my Datsun 240-Z, #9020 is at the very top of the Westbound Hump. In olden days, there was a two-storey Hump Tower located there. |
