PM 2-8-4 #1229 - Pere Marquette |
Description: |
Another mighty 2-8-4 Berkshire sits in the lined-out scrap line at the former Pere Marquette yard in New Buffalo, MI, along with several of its sister locos. Built by Lima in April of 1944 (serial #8463, class N-2), it served the Pere Marquette Railway well. When the PM roster finally merged into the C&O, the loco was never renumbered. It was written off the roster in January of 1958 but didn't actually meet the scrapper's torch until 1961 after being stored with sister units in New Buffalo, MI. Final specs - 70" drivers (upgraded from 69" in 1947), impressive 245 psi boiler pressure, 26x34" cylinders, engine weight of 442,500 lb, tractive effort of 69,350 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo. |

Pere Marquette Scrap Line at New Buffalo, Michigan |
Description: |
Truly a sad photo showing the massive scrap line at the former Pere Marquette yard in New Buffalo, MI. The unknown photographer listed the following PM locos in the line - 1238, 1229, 1231, 1228, 1232, and 1237. They were all written off the C&O roster (PM merged into the C&O in 1947 but these were not renumbered) but sat here until the scrapper's torch was ordered in 1961. What a massive pile of steel this line would have made! No photographer was listed for the photo. |
