CFE 2098 |
Description: |
Today my dad and I are going up to Northwest Indiana to do some railfanning in the region after we go to a model train show in Hobart, IN. Tomorrow we will go to the Great Midwest Train Show since we were unable to do so in October. The train show in Hobart was pretty nice! I got a N-Scale Chessie System GP9, unmotorized. Afterwards we began our railfanning in Northwest Indiana. Today we plan to go to Pine Jct for the first time. We have heard good things from other railfans around the surrounding areas so we hope to see lots of trains! First though we began our day in Hobart on the CFE. Luckily for us there was a train tied down for the weekend there! The area is under a Winter Storm Watch and there is probably about 6 inches of snow on the ground here now. |

After sitting at the west end of Warsaw (Selby Siding) for about an hour and a half, the westbound crew arrived to take the westbound train toward Hobart. I missed some NS action while out here, one train which had NS 1074 on the head end which I didnt know about until after the CFE train left. After getting a track warrant from NSs Chicago Dispatch, the train prepares to leave and take off west. I had pitched for the one for one of the CP SD40-2's to be leading today, but of course it had to be trailing. Oh well, the sharp orange does look nice in this sunlight! |

After receiving the warrant, the train took off out of Selby and continued west. There have been off and on tiny rain showers all throughout today, and unfortunately I seemed to be caught in one at this moment. Not the perfect sunlight like the last shot. |

The conductor stayed behind at Selby to throw the switch back to the main. The train stopped momentarily in Atwood to let the conductor drive back up to the head end with a maintenance worker. After the conductor was on board, the train notched up and began their trip west to Hobart. |

The train was moving very quickly so I wasnt able to get it in a lot of spaces like I had assumed. I jumped straight for Etna Green where I waiting no more than 2 minutes and the train raced by me. |

The train had a speed restriction in Bourbon so they slowed down just a bit. I would assume the speed restriction was for recent trackwork, as the last time I saw a train go through here with my dad, they were rocking at every bit of track speed. |

CFE 2098 would serve as the second unit when the train would be put together and taken back up to Fort Wayne the next day. Tying the train down here has been a more common occurrence in the past year or so due to crew shortages. With that, AJ and I decided to call it a day and head for supper at Wings Etc. in Decatur. After supper we went back to my house and AJ went home. An extremely good day trackside with plenty of good catches and shots taken. I always enjoy showing people from out of town around my neck of the woods and the many things it has to offer for the railfan. A very good day had, until the next one! |

I decided that driving back south to the Indy Line wasnt worth my time so I decided to go into Lima and see what I could find. Low and behold things were all quiet there as well, but I did happen to see the tail end of the CFE Robb Yard transfer getting back onto their own tracks at NS Tower. I made it back to Cole Street Yard Limits just in time to get it passing underneath the distant signal with CSX in downtown. The original PL head has been replaced with this new trilight which has been up for a little over a year now. I was never fortunate enough to get a train under the PL, but at least they didnt replace it with a vader. |
