PRR 8671, AS-18AM, c. 1958 |
Description: |
Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken from the 12th Street Footbridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1958. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8671, #8672, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. All are AS-18AM road switchers built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8671 and #8672 were constructed in March of 1958. In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers on a freight train that's heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignments. Visible across the tracks are some of the PRR's (now largely dormant) 12th Street Car Shops. Partially visible at the far right is the Passenger Station's venerable trainshed. |

Muleshoe. Here is a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken at the Muleshoe Curve on the New Portage Branch Line west of Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 29 October 1959. It was published originally in his 2019 book entitled "Pennsylvania Railroad-Best Of Bill Volkmer: Volume 3-Altoona," page 81. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8671, #8674, and #8677. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in March of 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They are pushing an iron-ore train up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they will uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another run up "The Mountain." |

PRR 8671, AS-18AM, 1960 |
Description: |
Sweetland. Here is duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, in October of 1960. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8671, #8674, and #8663. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company during 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. In this context, they're pushing a westbound mixed-cargo freight train that is already passing through the Allegheny Tunnel; in a matter of minutes, though, they'll uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." In the left foreground is the link to the westbound New Portage Secondary Track. |

PRR 8669, AS-18AM, 1963 |
Description: |
PGH-ALT-63. Here is an original photo that I took after riding in a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train from Pittsburgh to Altoona on 08 September 1963. Shown here (F to R) are PRR engines #8669 and #8671. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They are pulling a 94-car mixed-cargo freight train past the Altoona Passenger Station on their way to Enola and points East. Visible at the right are the last three cars of my passenger train as they depart for Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and New York City. Also visible is the 17th Street Bridge in the distance. This colorless photo taken from the 12th Street Bridge. |
