Album Info:The only thing about opening a time capsule and "Returning to Yesterday" is that the things that you might find there, are perhaps at best, only good for a limited number of people! As to why this might be, About these things I do not know and I can not say, except that Some people will understand and Some people will not! This is just the way it is! Some people dream a different dream--- because they have been told a different story. Thus they see things, in a different way. Some of these pictures I have not looked at or seen in over 40 years! They were taken in the middle to late 1960's by the young stallion that I once was back in those days when I was in high school or when I was working the interlocking towers on the Milwaukee Road near St Paul Yard and the St Paul Union Depot. It will take some time to review and upload the best of the several hundred pictures that there are in this collection. A special thanks to my friend Chris who works on the Amtrak desk on the mighty BNSF. Without his help and generosity, these images as he calls them would possibly not yet have been scanned, and I would not yet be uploading them, and thus not sharing them with you! Most of the dates for these pictures will be a guess or approximation of a date within the middle to late 1960's. I remember the places, but not so much the dates.

Title:  wooden caboose & kerosene markers
Description:  before the mergers started, before Amtrak and before there were so many computers, in so many places, doing so many things that some people began to wonder if it was such a good thing after all! Now we have NAFTA, open borders and anything can be anywhere at anytime! Enough said, you ever understand or you don't! I'm just glad and happy that I was able to be there and to see these things!

West 1
Title:  West 1
Description:  "Extra RI 44 West" enters the joint Milwaukee/ Burlington double track which was left hand running, back in train order days before the computerized ctc that it now is! How do I know, you ask?! Because I used to dispatch at Newport catching summer vacations on the BN dispatchers extra board at Northtown and also because I worked in three of the five interlocking towers that were on the line between St Paul and Hastings/ Prescott! Back in "train order days" it was fun to work there!

Crossing the Rock Island
Title:  Crossing the Rock Island
Description:  I think that this picture is south of Inver Grove towards Rosemount at the CGW/ RI interlocking. You can see the double headed signal protecting the interlocking as the RI main headed south to Iowa and Kansas City. The CGW turned more southeast toward Chicago. When the CNW took over the RI, they now longer used the CGW route between the Twin Cities and Chicago. It was not long before they began ripping it up and tearing it out! Thank God that they did NOT get control of the Milwaukee double track with the Amtrak route between Chicago, Milwaukee and the Twin Cities. Who knows the things that then might have happened! One thing is perhaps true... the RI main south of the Twin Cities thru Albert Lea would probably been torn up also!

31 cents a gallon
Title:  31 cents a gallon
Description:  It was probably not June 10th, 1968 because that was my operators date on the Milwaukee Road and I was in La Crosse, Wisconsin taking the "rules class" with the Chief Dispatcher back in those days when there was such a person! It was a time when GP9s ran together with F7As and/ or Bs--- and when GP30s & GP35s were new! AND before I forget it was also when gas was 31cents a gallon! That must have been nice you say?! Well considering that people then maybe made 2 or 3 dollars an hour and 5 cents worth of Jelly Beans would last all day--- I suppose all things are relative! But was it better than?! Yes and No is perhaps the correct answer!

classic GN
Title:  classic GN
Description:  forces bigger than all of us were and had been working quitely in the background. The "Big Sky Blue" paint scheme was revealed to us in 1967. And so as I graduated from high school, things were beginning to change here also! The old colors that so many knew for so many years were on the way out and the GN goat was now becoming streamlined! In three more years, things would change again with the coming of "the big merger"--- the Burlington Northern! It makes me wonder what Mister Hill would have thought! Would he have been pleased?!

Title:  at Soo Line Jct
Description:  bending the iron or if you wish reversing the switch on the NP westbound main at Soo Line Jct. The bridge heads to the St Paul freight house. How many freight houses were there in downtown St Paul? Let's count them 1) Soo Line 2) Great Northern 3) Northern Pacific 4) Chicago Great Western 5) the Omaha, not to be confused with the CNW and 6) the Milwaukee Road. The St Paul Union Depot saw passenger trains from these six plus also the Burlington and the Rock Island!
