Southern Commissary Car 4061
Title:  Southern Commissary Car 4061
Description:  During the first several years of the Southern Railway's DEEP SOUTH STEAM EXCURSIONS from New Orleans to Hattiesburg and back, begining in 1971, I worked at the souvenir counter on commissary car 4061. Among other things, I was in charge of ordering and keeping inventory of the books, patches, post cards, goggles, gloves, watch fobs and all of the other nonconsunable things we had to sell. (Coffee, donuts, soft drinks, etc. were sold at a counter at the opposite end of the car.) Bob Scorsone captured me counting money, probably near the end of one trip, but the specific date and location were not recorded.

SPCC RS11 13
Title:  SPCC RS11 13
Description:  Southern Peru Copper Corp. RS11 number 13 was in the Kansas City Southern's WEST YARD, just outside of New Orleans, coupled to one of the railroad's 350-379 series homemade bay-window cabooses. No. 13 was built in September 1959 as Southern Pacific 5869, renumbered SP 5869 in 1965 and retired in May 1973. Here it was on its way from being overhauled by Morrison-Knudsen in Boise, Idaho to export through the Port of New Orleans. KCS cabs 350-379 rode on Allied FULL-CUSHION trucks from former troop sleepers. The trucks were banned from interchange service in 1955, but that didn't seem to bother the KCS !

Freedom Train
Title:  Freedom Train
Description:  The American Freedom Train heads into the morning sun on the Illinois Central Gulf's Baton Rouge District at signal L438.3, between Destrehan and St. Rose, Louisiana. The photo was taken from the open platform of the last car on the 26-car train as it made its way from Baton Rouge to New Orleans behind former Southern Pacific 4-8-4 number 4449. The cars to the left of the signal are Display Cars numbered downward from 109. The cars to the right are Display Car 110, Exit Car 111, Power Car 200, Sleeper 201, Combine 202, Lounge 203, Hospitality Car 204 and Press Car 205. The signal is located on the 'wrong' side of the track because the signal system utilizes a single mast on one side of the track, with signal heads facing in both directions. The signals along this line were originally located on both sides of the track; but after the high-voltage power line was installed along the right-of-way, electrical interference required the the IC to replace the signal system.

ATSF 2884
Title:  ATSF 2884
Description:  The Santa Fe only owned 63.5 miles of track in Louisiana and this is the only photo I ever took of an ATSF train on this trackage. This local had originated in Silsbee, Texas the previous day and worked its way 72 miles here to DeRidder, where the crew tied up. At 6:55 A.M. I found the train just as the crew had left it the previous evening, facing east just west of the KCS crossing.

This branch was constructed by the Jasper & Eastern -- a subsidiary of the Gulf Colorado & Santa Fe -- between 1905 and 1908. The CG&SF was chartered in 1873 and was unrelated to the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe until 1884, when it became a subsidiary of the AT&SF. The GC&SF incorporated the J&E in 1904 to build eastward from its Silsbee-Longview route at Kirbyville, Texas. Construction began in Kirbyville in 1905 and was completed to Oakdale (milepost 80.8) on 9 February 1908.

Throughout its history, the lifeblood of this line had been forest products: timber, lumber, crossties, naval stores, pulpwood and paper. In later years, all of the J&E's connections were with other Class I railroads: the Missouri Pacific at Bleakwood, Texas; the Kansas City Southern and the Southern Pacific at DeRidder, and the Missouri Pacific at Oakdale; but during the heyday of logging in southwest Louisiana, the J&E connected with at least a half dozen rail lines which were owned by lumber companies. In later years, the line's customers included a lumber mill and a chemical plant in Oakdale, a paper mill at Elizabeth, and a turpentine distillery, a wood treatment plant, an aggregate distributor, and a paper mill at DeRidder. Pulpwood was loaded at Pitkin and crossties at Merryville.

The J&E was absorbed into the GC&SF in 1948, and the GC&SF itself was absorbed into the AT&SF in 1965. The easternmost 40 miles of the branch -- from DeRidder to Oakdale -- was abandoned on 28 April 1986. On 31 December 1997 the Santa Fe merged with the Burlington Northern to form the Burlington Northern Santa Fe, and in June 1998 BNSF sold the remaining part of the line to the Timber Rock Railroad, a new subsidiary of Watco.
