Christmas display in Seay Plaza
Title:  Christmas display in Seay Plaza
Description:  Strung up with Christmas lights and parked under the post flag pole in Seay Plaza, 4635 is on display for the Holidays. Built in 1954 as a GP-9 it was rebuilt to a GP-16 in 1979 by the SCL and was re-conditioned by Conrail at Juniata Locomotive Shops in 1993, then sent to the Fort Eustis Military Railway. The flag is at half mast to honor the death of President Ford, who died the night before.

Description:  This was the busiest day the Fort Eustis RR has had in years. It was worked by the Army Reserves and civilian contractors in two shifts. By the end of the day over a hundred fifty 89' flats had been loaded with floating causeways.

Description:  Now used as a tool car, this box car was supposed to be part of a NORAD nuclear war response train that would travel the country, with warheads. When communism fell this plan fell through with it and the train never saw action.

Outside the rail shop
Title:  Outside the rail shop
Description:  A 1/2 Ton Toyota Pick-Up sits next to an 80-Ton GE Switcher used by the Utility Rail Branch, and a small track speeder used by the track maintenance department. This old work horse (the locomotive, not my truck) is responsible for the switching duties around the garrison. Rebuilt in 1989, the center cab has two Cummins 6 cylinder turbos while the 1991 king cab (as it was called in the 90s) also equipped with 6 cylinders.

Title:  733RD Logistics Readiness Squadron, Utility Rail
Description:  Joint Base Langley - Eustis was established when the 2010 Base Realignment combined the commands of Langley Air Force Base with nearby Fort Eustis. The joint basing saw the US Air Force take control of the railway operations, while the US Army would continue to oversee military railway training and certification. In summary the USAF controls the freight trains and the Army is responsible for all rail education programs.
