DIR Caboose #22 - Duluth & Iron Range
Title:  DIR Caboose #22 - Duluth & Iron Range
Description:  With its short body length and 4 wheel configuration, it would be classified as a "bobber" caboose. Getting their nickname from the way that a floating bobber danced in the water on the end of a fishing line, “bobber” cabooses tended to ride rough and jostle riders. This was primarily due to their short length and use of only two, “fixed” (i.e., non-swiveling) axles with four wheels. Bet this would have been a "shaking shack" on the early rails!

DIR Wooden Ore Car #251 - Duluth & Iron Range
Title:  DIR Wooden Ore Car #251 - Duluth & Iron Range
Description:  The car's original number was not 251 but instead possibly 290, 316 or 340. For the 50th Anniversary of Ore celebration the car was restored and renumbered #251 to represent the first ore car delivered to the Duluth & Iron Range. The cars in the series were 28 foot wooden structures but later rebuilt to 24 foot to better fit the dock pockets. Each could haul a maximum of 20 tons of ore boulders. From 1900 on, only steel ore cars were ordered and the last wooden ore car was phased out in 1909.

DIR Handcar - Duluth & Iron Range
Title:  DIR Handcar - Duluth & Iron Range
Description:  Although a fuzzy pic, this little handcar was the original way that crew members could travel to inspect the rail lines. Some call these units "strong arm cars" as you would surely develop some arm bulges after using it!

DIR RR Velocipede - Duluth & Iron Range
Title:  DIR RR Velocipede - Duluth & Iron Range
Description:  Another form of transit for rr workers would have been this velocipede which is nothing more than a bicycle fitted to travel on the rails. this particular version would have used arm power rather than leg power to move the unit down the tracks. Again, some would call it a "strong arm car" for obvious reasons.
