Viewing Album: Northeast WI, Winter 2022
By:
T. P. Bruss
Dates:
12/21/2021 - 3/20/2022
Album Info:
Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the winter of 2022, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, MILW, and SOO rails, as well as FV&LS operating on former SOO, MILW, C&NW, and GB&W rails. Once in a while I hope to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Description:
A pair of CN locals meet at Milepost 211 on former C&NW rails at Stroebd, WI, on 29 Jan. '22. The local on the left was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The socal on the right was headed back to Neenah after switching Appvion at Appleton. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerl~ Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016. The location of this photograph is listed as “Stroebe(2)” because whomever first listed Stroebe as a location on rrpicturearchives.net erroneously entered it as Outagamie Co., instead of Winmebago Co. The former SOO rails run parallel along the other side of these tracks.

A CN passes the station sign as it transitions from the former C&NW rails to the former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 29 Jan. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

IC 3110
Description:
A CN local crosses the South Channel of the Fox River (a.k.a. the Neenah Channel of the Fox River) with 25 3-bay covered hoppers via the former joint MILW/SOO bridge at Neenah, WI, on 4 Feb. '22. Local was headed for Hilbert and Chilton. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill was the backdrop for this scene for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006. The mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, and Ascension Medical Group - Main Street (originally Affinity), 101 Main St., occupy most of the site of the old paper mill. Some people think these new buildings look nice; I despise them. One of the bridges for the Loop-the-Lake Trail is on the right. It appears that some have attempted to change the name to Loop-the-Little-Lake Trail for some reason.

BNSF 8352, CN 3064, and CN 5469
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Union St. as it shoves a cut of cars into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 12 Feb. '22. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

Description:
A CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it drops off some cars for the FV&LS (or FOXY) at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 25 Sep. '20. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible beyond that. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975.

HLCX 1042
Description:
A FV&LS (or FOXY) train hugs the bluff and passes the Vulcan Heritage Park as it descends the grade into 'The Flats' via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at Appleton, WI, on 6 Mar. '22. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. Now just a short branch line, this stretch of rail (laid in 1874 (some references state 1875 or 1876)) is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. The MILW, originally M&N, rails used to run parallel on this side of the tracks (from 1880 until 1981). Most of the land in the foreground was created when the mill race, or power canal, was filled in. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.'

Whitman Ave., at the northwest corner of the wye at the former CN, originally C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 12 Mar. '22. This track, which is now part of the north leg of the wye, is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. The facility partially visible in the background to the right is Foremost Farms USA, 1815 W. Spencer St. They had a spur which was removed ca. Sep. '20, it had not been used for quite a while. An old caboose is displayed in the background to the left. It is painted as RI 17177. Some references claim it was not their caboose, but MILW. It is currently for sale. I wish I could afford to purchase it (the price is not listed, but, as the old saying goes, if you have to ask, you can't afford it).

Description:
A CN through freight bisects the intersection of W. Franklin St. and N. Division St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 19 Mar. '22. Hoersch Home Appliance, 218 N. Division St., has been in business since 1945, previously known as Home Appliance Co. until at least '67. Previously located at 225 W. College Ave. ca. '50s, later located at 307 W. College Ave., until it moved to this location ca. '82. The former Furnishings Unlimited warehouse stands on the other side of the tracks at right. The historic address of the facility is 323 N. Clark St. The current business address is 311 N. Superior St.; the address probably changed after an addition was added to the northeast end of the facility after 1981. The building was likely erected by the Cohen Bros. Fruit Co., after a natural gas explosion destroyed their previous facility ca. 10 Sep. 1948 (or was the damaged building repaired?). Furnishings Unlimited acquired the facility in or prior to 1981. The building had painted signs for Cohen Bros. and Sunkist until at least 1981. The facility used to receive rail service, but it hasn't for quite some time. The most recent occupant is, or was, Appleton Furniture Direct.
