GN #1072 GEORGE F. BAKER
Description:
Built in 1929 by Pullman in Lot #6249 to Plan #3990 as barber shop-7 seat lounge-8 seat dinette (2 4-seat tables)-buffet (kitchen)-writing desk-14 seat lounge-8 seat solarium observation GEORGE F. BAKER, 1 of 8 such cars built in that Lot for the brand new EMPIRE BUILDER; cars were outshopped in May and June, the BUILDER launched on June 11th, replacing the ORIENTAL LIMITED. In February 1941, 7 of these cars were sold to GN as #1070-#1076 (3rd), the GEORGE F. BAKER as #1072 (2nd); the 8th car, the NORMAN W. KITTSON, was sold in July 1945 to the Southern, which rebuilt it to business car #4 (now on the Austin & Texas Central as the BOONESBOROUGH). After the first streamlined EMPIRE BUILDER trainsets were delivered in 1947, these cars were reassigned to secondary trains, including the then-2nd run ORIENTAL LIMITED. With the delivery of the Mid-Century EMPIRE BUILDER, the 1947 cars were reassigned to the new WESTERN STAR, which replaced the ORIENTAL LIMITED, and displaced the 1929 cars. However, on occasion, the 1929 cars would be pulled from other assignments and added to the WESTERN STAR, as seen here, while the newer lightweight cars were being shopped. No longer needed for passenger duty, 2 cars were rebuilt in 1952 to streamlined baggage cars #306-#307, #1073 (3rd) was rebuilt in 1954 to streamlined buffet lounge-parlor observation #1085 (2nd), 2 cars were rebuilt in 1959 to streamlined baggage cars #318-#319, and the last 2 cars were rebuilt in 1963 to streamlined baggage cars #320-#321; the #1072 as #320 (2nd). 3 of the 6 rebuilt baggage cars were later transferred to the BN MofW department, including the #320 (2nd) as #976003. Scanned with an Epson V550 from an original Kodachrome 35mm slide. Exact date is approximate.

UP HARVARD CLUB
Description:
Built in October 1914 by Pullman in Lot #4292 to Plan #2521A as the 10 section (10S) sleeper-lounge observation PLEASANT HILL, 1 of 20 such cars built in that Lot; cars were outshopped between September and October. 10 cars were built for AT&SF, and 10 for MP, including the PLEASANT HILL. Between November 1933 and November 1936, 9 of the 20 cars were rebuilt to Plan #4025 8 section (8S) sleeper-buffet lounge solarium observations (various suffixes); the PLEASANT HILL was the last car to be rebuilt, in November 1936, to the HARVARD CLUB, originally Plan #4025D, changed to Plan variant #4025Q in February 1944. At the 12/31/1948 Pullman divestiture, UP acquired 2 of the Lot #4292, Plan #4025 cars: the HARVARD CLUB and the YALE CLUB, which had been rebuilt in September 1936 from the CASA BLANCA (built for AT&SF); the YALE CLUB was also originally Plan #4025D and changed to #4025Q in December 1943. At the divestiture, both cars were leased to Pullman for operation, and both were withdrawn from said lease in late October 1958. Both were subsequently scrapped in circa 1962. Scanned with an Epson V550 from an original Kodachrome 35mm slide.

GWT ARGONAUT
Description:
Built by Pullman in January 1914 in Lot #4211 to Plan #2502A as private car PHILADELPHIA, 1 of 3 such cars (the other 2 were the BOSTON and the WASHINGTON) built in that Lot and outshopped in January 1914. The PHILADELPHIA was 1 of 2 Pullman business cars sold to the WP in April 1942: the other car was the DAVY CROCKETT, which became WP #106. The #105 was retired and sold in May or June 1963 to Dick Reynolds, who had the car named CARIBOO. After an initial run on SP's mail train THE KLAMATH (#20 EB/#19 WB) from Oakland to Dunsmuir and back June 22nd-23rd for the McCLOUD RIVER RATTLER photo freight, the CARIBOO entered California-to-Mexico charter service; these were the predecessor trips to Great Western Tours. The car was later renamed ARGONAUT, and after the dissolution of GWT, the car saw use on the Napa Valley Wine Train. Meanwhile, the #106 was later retired and sold to Marty Lummis, and is now in the collection of the WP RR Museum. Scanned with an Epson V550 from a Kodachrome original 35mm slide. GNW&BRY RISING GORGE
Description:
Built by Pullman in January 1914 in Lot #4211 to Plan #2502A as private car BOSTON, 1 of 3 such cars (the other 2 were the PHILADELPHIA and the WASHINGTON) built in that Lot and outshopped in January 1914. The BOSTON was 1 of 2 Pullman business cars sold to the NP in December 1941, with the BOSTON becoming NP #6, and was named JEFFERSON RIVER in February 1956. The other car sold to NP at that time was the NEWPORT, which became NP #4, and which was named GALLATIN RIVER in 1957. The #6/JEFFERSON RIVER was retired and sold in April 1966 to William Warren Nugent and Arthur E. Pew III as Going Nowhere & Back RY (GNW&B) RISING GORGE. The car was resold in circa 1970 to L.V. "Rocky" Rockafellow as the ALEXAUKER, and who had it moved to Stockton, NJ, and parked next to the former Pullman 6C-3DR sleeper HERALD SQUARE, which was owned by Edward J. Joscelyn, who was slowly rebuilding it to a business car with the name CHENANGO. Rockafellow then had the ALEXAUKEN moved to Ringoes, NJ, in 1974, and it was resold again to Don Lee in circa 1980. Lee worked for the Indiana & Ohio RY, so the car was then moved to the Buckeye State. It was resold again in 1995 to an unknown party, and was moved to Logan, OH, possibly moved to the HVSR at East Logan.

Built by Pullman in December 1915 in Lot #4362 as the Plan #2521B 10 section (10S) sleeper-lounge observation NORTH GATE for the general service pool. Changed to Plan variant #2521E in October 1930 and repainted at that time from Pullman Green to MILW Maroon & Orange. Repainted back to Pullman Green in May 1934. Sold to the Burlington at the 12/31/1948 divestiture as #673 (1st), later renumbered to #640 (2nd). HULEN at that time. Hulen was the first president (as of 1930) of the Burlington-Rock Island RR, a 50-50 joint-CRI&P/CB&Q (C&S)-owned company in Texas. The #94 later went back to the CB&Q in February 1967, and was sold that same month to Walter Loftin, Jr.-Rail Travel Associates in Arlington, VA.
