Here is a 15-page article by Mr. Bert Pennypacker entitled "Soliloquy Of Altoona." It was published originally in the April 1978 issue of "Rails Northeast" magazine, pages 16-30. "During the busiest years of the 1940's, the giant railroad workshop produced each day 16 new box cars, 10 new gondolas, 2 new cabin cars, and heavy class repairs to 6 locomotives. In addition, 2 new locomotives and 2 new tenders were completed each week." (Page 19) * Repaired Album *

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3872, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata in June of 1923 and retired in April of 1958 after 35 years of service.

Here is page four of a 15-page article by Bert Pennypacker entitled "Soliloquy Of Altoona." It was published originally in the April 1978 issue of "Rails Northeast" magazine, page 19. Partial Caption: "A pair of F-3's (9696 & 9697) drift into the yards after making the descent off the mountain." Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9696 and #9697. Both are EH-15's built by GM-BMD in April of 1949, rated at 1,500 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as EF-15A's. #9696 was retired in December of 1963, but #9697 went on to serve with the Penn Central. Here is page 14 of a 15-page article by Bert Pennypacker entitled "Soliloquy Of Altoona." It was published originally in the April 1978 issue of "Rails Northeast" magazine, page 29. Photo Caption: "Eastbound and westbound pass each other. The I1sa heads east with hot merchandise and LCL traffic, while a 3-unit F3 departs for Pitcairn. Taken just east of the 4th St. Bridge by F.S. Gamber in 1956." In the forefront is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9689, is an EH-15 built in February of 1949, later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15A, and retired in August of 1967 after just 18 years of revenue service.

Shown here is PRR engine #2796, a B-8A (0-6-0T) tank switcher built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as a B-8 (0-6-0) during September of 1905, later rebuilt in Juniata as a B-8A (0-6-0T), and retired in July of 1955 after 50 years of faithful service.

Here is page one of a 15-page article by Bert Pennypacker entitled "Soliloquy Of Altoona." It was published originally in the April 1978 issue of "Rails Northeast" magazine, page 17. Partial Caption: "'Aerotrain' approaches [Gallitzin] Tunnel with a westbound scheduled passenger run. . . . Photo taken at Gallitzin, Pa., Sept. 56, by Philip R. Hastings." The PRR's "Aerotrain" was built by General Motors during July of 1955, but lasted only a year or so before being withdrawn from service.
