Annual Report Color Cover ~ 1951
Description:
Here is the front cover of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company's 105th Annual Report for the Year Ending 31 December 1951. Issued: 12 March 1952. Color illustration by Mr. Grif Teller. Cover Caption: "The Horseshoe Curve in the scenic Allegheny Mountains west of Altoona, Pennsylvania." There is also something symbolic here: there are five diesel engines depicted in the foreground...there is barely a hint of a steam locomotive in the distance...it's the advent of the diesel era and the passing of the age of steam...alas.

Annual Report Color Cover, Front Portion, 1954
Description:
Here is the front portion of the wrap-around color cover of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company's 108th Annual Report for the Year Ending 31 December 1954. The photographer is not identified. Partial Cover Caption: "To celebrate the 100th Anniversary year of the opening of the Horseshoe Curve and the 75th Anniversary of the incandescent lamp, engineers of Sylvania Electric Products arranged to take a flashlight picture of the Curve as freight and passenger trains rounded it the night of October 20, 1954. The project to illuminate over 2,000,000 square feet required months of meticulous planning, 31 miles of wiring, and more than 6,000 large photoflash bulbs. With a burst of skyrockets lending color to the scene, cameras atop a 150-foot tower recorded the historic flash ~ the largest night photograph ever taken." In the foreground is a westbound passenger train headed by Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5862, an EP-20 built by GM-EMD in February of 1948 and retired in September of 1967 after just 19 years of revenue service.

Annual Report Color Cover ~ 1959
Description:
Here is the front cover of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company's 113th Annual Report for the Year Ending 31 December 1959. Issued: 24 February 1960. Cover Picture: "Through the Night." The photographer and the actual location are not identified. Photo Caption: "The speed and precision of modern railroading are caught in this impressionistic photograph ~ as the lighted coaches and red 'tail-light' markers of a passing train etch its path below a signal bridge along the Pennsylvania's main line between New York and Washington. The short, bright streak at the bottom of the picture and the two streaks at the lower left are the interrupted tracings of the headlight and windows of an oncoming train which were temporarily blotted out by the train on the near track. The picture was taken in a June twilight, using an f/3.5 lens aperture and a time exposure sufficiently long to allow the speeding train to enter and leave the picture."
