Pushing to Jamaica
Title:  Pushing to Jamaica
Description:  An Oyster Bay train has made its stop at Mineola and the MP 15 on the east end is now pushing to a connection with the rest of the world at Jamaica. This was standard power for some trains on that line in the 80s. Note the parlor just ahead of the diesel. This was the train set that had the subscription car for the high end commuters on it, now returning to Jamaica.

Title:  Mighty mite

Wishful thinking
Title:  Wishful thinking
Description:  A pair of FAs is coupled elephant style at the Morris Park shop, probably dreaming of the days when theyd go out like this on heavy freight. Ah, the memories!! Note the coupler on 105. This is one of the Harold protect engines, along with 101. They are fitted with couplers that will mate with the M 1 and M 3 cars, and are stationed at Harold Tower in LI City, to fetch a disabled MU train should it be necessary. The pair would shortly be repainted in a dark gray/orange scheme, a 1960's retro paint job that was quite attractive on them.

Out behind the barn
Title:  Out behind the barn
Description:  This FA has been pushed off into exile, where the dead power winds up. Dont know if this unit ever ran again-it looks like it had a fire. There were a few that disappeared for a while-sometimes months-only to show up again later. By this time, all four of the ex MILW and B&O F units were running, and the more marginal FAs were going into storage. The completion of the electrification to Ronkonkoma would spell the end for a number of these classics in a few months.

New station
Title:  New station
Description:  As the Ronkonkoma electrification project nearedcompletion, some of the stations were finished and ready to enter service. As this happened, trains began stopping at the new platforms and the old ones were removed from service. One such place was Bethpage, where the new station is in use, though the official opening is still three months off. This group of home bound commuters undoubtedly appreciated the improvement.

Title:  New station, old train
Description:  An FA leads a Jamaica bound Ronkonkoma train at the new Deer Park station, already open in advance of the projects completion. North side view
Title:  North side view
Description:  The area around 2nd St and Willis Av in Mineola was bounded on two sides by the LIRR Main Line and the Oyster Bay branch. The railroad used it for storage, and just about anything could turn up there. It did not make for a scenic photo, and was on the "dark side" most of the day anyway. The light wasnt too bad this day, and I caught the GP 38 class unit leading a Ronkonkoma train past Nassau Tower-seen above the next to last car of the train-on its way east.

Description:  Sperry car 134 rolls through New Hyde Park on track 1 as it checks for rail defects. Working the electrified zone could be a challenge for the Sperry car, since it needed an absolute clear to run, a hard thing to come by with the traffic density on this end of the railroad.

MP 15 leading
Title:  MP 15 leading
Description:  Oyster Bay trains in the off hours tended to have light ridership. This resulted in them having short consists, and often had MP 15s for power, rather than the GP 38s that most of the other lines saw for power. An Oyster Bay train is rolling east at New Hyde Park as it makes its way to its next stop in Mineola.

Bring on the snow
Title:  Bring on the snow
Description:  A major snowfall was predicted for this day-the NY area got over 14"-and many places let their employees out early, including mine. Instead of going home like any sensible person, I went out to shoot train pictures. As the storm was getting started, I caught this Oyster Bay train blasting through New Hyde Park. By 6 PM, things would be thoroughly bogged down in the snow.

Straight shot
Title:  Straight shot
Description:  The LIRR Main Line is straight as an arrow for 17 miles from Jamaica to Hicksville. There are not many crossings in this stretch, and most of those are in Mineola. West of Mineola, there are four. The first is Herricks Rd, where we see this westbound Port Jefferson train approaching behind an MP 15 power pack. Herricks Road was the site of one of the more infamous incidents on the LIRR. In 1982, a van with ten kids-all late teens/early 20s-was rolling toward the crossing here. The gates were down, and there was a line of cars waiting, not uncommon given that this is the only place to cross between Mineola and Merillon Av stations. The van ran around the waiting cars, and around the gates. It was hit square on by GP 38-2 265 leading a Port Jefferson train at 65 MPH. All but one of the occupants of the van died in the wreck; one was the daughter of a NY State senator. To no ones surprise, alcohol consumption by the driver was a contributing factor.

Alcos by the coal dock
Title:  Alcos by the coal dock
Description:  A pair of C 420s, now stored since the Ronkonkoma electrification rendered newer diesels available for freight service, pose by the concrete coal dock at Morris Park shop. The Alcos will have a brief reprieve, and return to service for a few more years. The coaling tower has, however, seen its last steam engine. The tracks in the foreground are the Atlantic Branch, which are coming out of the Atlantic Av tunnel, where they have been since just east of Nostrand Av station in Brooklyn. The cars beyond the Alcos are part of the alcohol train, and are equipped to spray an alcohol based chemical on the third rail to keep it from getting iced up in winter.

Title:  No more action
Description:  Or maybe there will be. A pair of C 420s rendered surplus sit behind the shop at Morris Park. At this point, their future looks dim, but the Centuries will rise again, and have an indian summer for a few years before finally going to scrap. Note the other equipment stashed with the Alcos-a cupola caboose, a box car, and a retire B 60 baggage car. I can recall seeing these on some east end trains in the 1960's.

Spraying for contact
Title:  Spraying for contact
Description:  The LIRR had a couple of cars specially equipped with tanks of alcohol and spraying equipment to shoot alcohol on the third rail. This reduced the likelihood of ice forming on the third rail, preventing contact, thus making it possible for trains to continue running in snowy weather. Today one of the cars is sandwiched between a pair of MP 15s westbound at New Hyde Park Rd. This must have been a preventive move, as the day is clear.
