Erie Lackawanna lives |
Description: |
I have occasionally mentioned that in the early days of Conrail, and even in the NJ Transit era, it was possible to get the flavor of the predecessor roads while on their lines. Case in point: Hoboken. Here we see a train bound for the Main Line to Suffern, behind power and cars that could, except for the diamond herald on the power(many of the cars still carried them) be an EL train. In the background is a DLW MU car, still lettered EL, and, lo and behold, and ex Erie Stilwell, albeit painted CR blue and probably an office, or in MOW service, a task it most likely ended its EL career doing. Hoboken, and to some extent the entire ex EL operation, was a time machine. |

View of the bridge |
Description: |
The Erie built several great steel bridges, among them, Kinzua Viaduct in PA, Portage Bridge, one of two bridges on two lines over the Genesee, and the only one over that river still in service; Belfast, the other Genesee River crossing, abandoned after Conrail took over the EL, and dismantled by 1984; and this one, 3200 foot long Moodna Viaduct, which sees commuter trains on a daily basis. This is what it looks like through a very dirty RDC front window. Its a long way across there, and a long way down!! |

Not your average EL meet. |
Description: |
RDCs were never part of the EL world-the ones here came from PRSL-so to see then meeting a train of the usual EL equipment here at Suffern, is, well, unusual. Otherwise the shot is classic EL, four track main, station house on the left next to the eastbound platform. Just need a PO Ordinary rolling down the inside track toward Croxton behind a mix of GP 7's and RS 3's. |

The new station at Middletown is on the formerly freight only Graham Line, now handling passenger trains since the original Erie main was abandoned through Chester, Goshen and Middletown. RDCs to Suffern |
Description: |
After Conrail abandoned the Erie main through Goshen and Chester, MTA built stations to accomodate trains running on the new rouite, via the Graham Line and Moodna Viaduct. Harriman also got a new station east of Newburgh Jct, as the old one was on the Erie main just west of NJ. Here a pair of RDCs of NYC heritage make their stop with an afternoon shuttle that will connect with a Hoboken train at Suffern. |

End of the line |
Description: |
Or at least as far as this train will go. The pair of RDCs I shot at Middletown has arrived at Port Jervis and waits for time to head back to Suffern and a Hoboken connection. |

Going Home |
Description: |
A NJ Transit train led by the usual U34, still running on its EL home, arrives at Suffern as the evening rush gets underway. Look to the left of the engine. Anyone remember Grand Union?? |

Ex CNW unit |
Description: |
The last unit of the U34CH fleet was a rebuild of a CNW U30, and was numbered 4183. Here it is at Ridgewood with a Hoboken bound train, a bonus while waiting for Blue Mountain & Reading 425, which would pass westbound shortly, as we can see by the assembled masses at the station. |

U34 disco |
Description: |
Most of the U34s eventually got the NJ Transit "disco" scheme, to my mind a real comedown from the elegany adaptation of the EL paint diagram they wore as delivered. This one is westbound at Geln Rock |
