The CB yard job
Title:  The CB yard job
Description:  Here's the story. The IAIS road train behind 4 EMDs, brought in 96 cars, and dropped them on the main. 900 tied on and proceeded to pull the entire train through the yard, and yard it from the north end. Run 8 action past the engine house.

BRLX 22
Title:  BRLX 22
Description:  Burlington River Terminal used this S3 to switch cars until it was donated to Boone & Scenic Valley. However, BSV had no interest in the engine, and let it sit until scrapped in Burlington in 2010. This is where I would usually make a snide comment about the state of railroad preservation, but I'll refrain.

Last look at the North Western
Title:  Last look at the North Western
Description:  Moorland was the site of an out of the way junction between a former CNW secondary main and a couple of branchlines. For some reason, unpatched CNW equipment kept ruling Moorland past the UP merger. This picture is significant to me because it was the last time I ever saw an unpatched original CNW engine still in service. When I stopped to shoot this, I had no idea it would be the last. Battered workhorse 6847 in all its North Western glory, complete with a smiley face on the front bell, wrapped up my former employer for me.

Iowa Northwestern Local
Title:  Iowa Northwestern Local
Description:  Although I've got a folder for IANW, I think a picture here is also required. IANW was so out-of-the-way that railfans hardly ever saw it running. I worked there, so I had an in. Pulling up the hill in a snowstorm, we're going to deliver MTs for corn loading, and loads of fertilizer. I still can't believe this is now a trail....

BSVY 205 becomes MSTL 244
Title:  BSVY 205 becomes MSTL 244
Description:  Not really MSTL 244, but a really good re-creation. Unfortunately, the current BSV is not doing anything except basic maintenance anymore. Too much debt and nearly no volunteers, plus an influx of EMDs. Management or lack thereof.

Burlington Junction in Le Mars
Title:  Burlington Junction in Le Mars
Description:  BJRY's latest operation is in the Le Mars industrial park. I got there right at dusk, and the units were parked behind a row of tanks cars, so no light to speak of. Still, a RS4TC is always worth it.

The Transco critter
Title:  The Transco critter
Description:  Iowa railroading has become a whole lot more homogeneous over the years, but the state can still produce a real gem once in a while. This is a Baldwin/Whitcomb model S3, one of only 5 built. No idea on its lineage, and its listed here in RRPA under Whitcomb and model.

The 3 foot gauge Bellevue & Cascade rides again
Title:  The 3 foot gauge Bellevue & Cascade rides again
Description:  In Maquoketa, the Jackson County Historical Society decided to make bold move of building a replica wood combine based on B&C car 8. They already had the last remaining B&C depot, so why not. The combine has a full interior, including mail. Not bad for a small group of volunteers.

Steam powered freight in 2021
Title:  Steam powered freight in 2021
Description:  Lots of pics out there of this one, but a steam powered freight in Iowa in 2021 fits a photo album called Iowa Obscurity. Particularly because I had no idea it was even happening, and was also driving a way I had never gone before. Probably used up all my good railfanning luck for the rest of my life on this one.

Black Betty and the Green Hornet
Title:  Black Betty and the Green Hornet
Description:  DIR is probably the most obscure Iowa shortline, from a railfan perspective. We only run as needed, and 98% of operations are back in inaccessible areas. So thought I would post a pic of the entire roster outside today. Black Betty has a chat with The Green Hornet on a miserably cold March afternoon. This is a "I can because I work there" shot.
