Album Info:The Coast Line is Amtrak's main passenger corridor between the San Francisco-Bay Area and the Los Angeles Metro Area. Added to the mix are Union Pacific locals, reroutes, and Caltrain between Morgan Hill and Gilroy. This album covers the UP Coast Sub from the State Highway 85 overpass in South San Jose to Spence, just south of Salinas, and also includes images from SP's abandoned Monterey Branch, which once ran from Castroville to Monterey.

SP Gilroy Yard
Title:  SP Gilroy Yard
Description:  To catch the Coast Starlight, we set up at the site of the old Gilroy yard. At this site was a 3 stall roundhouse, turntable, and water tower, as well as a small yard. The enginehouse closed in the mid 30s, and by 1971, passenger service to Gilroy had ended with the end of the Del Monte. Now, only a pair of hand-thrown sidings with derails for MOW equipment remain. Note the Caltrain storage yard on the far right.

Description:  Amtrak 32009 breezes through Gilroy. This car, name after the founder of the Pullman Company, George M. Pullman, is the last car built by Pullman. This is the third time I have caught the Pullman in 2021, all three times on the northbound Coast Starlight.

Description:  The Watsonville Depot is located just east of downtown. The depot originally served SP passenger trains, although it hasnt seen use since the final Del Monte passed through in 1971. today, the tracks are owned by the Santa Cruz Big Trees, & Pacific Railway.

Description:  Santa Cruz and Big Trees 2467 sits quiet in the engine terminal at Watsonville. The Santa Cruz and Big Trees Railroad, operator of a tourist line from Felton to Santa Cruz, purchased the Watsonville-Davenport branch on April 30, 2021. Two CF7s the railroad purchased from Texas were transferred to Watsonville, and now operate the line.

Description:  Santa Cruz and Big Trees 2524 rests in Watsonville. 2524 was built in late 1949 as an F7A for Santa Fe. In the mid 70s, the locomotive was rebuilt at Cleburne as a CF7. When ATSF was looking to sell off their CF7s, the Red River Valley and Western, an affiliate of Twin Cities and Western, purchased several of the CF7s. This unit and its sister 2467 were then purchased by the Texas Rock Crusher Railway, who in turn sold it to the SCBG in June of 2018.

Description:  The north end of Union Pacifics Watsonville Yard is quiet on this Saturday evening. This yard serves as the start and end location of several Coast Line locals, as well as the UPs connection to the Watsonville Branch, a shortline serving industries in Watsonville. Today, a trio of MOW hoppers and a single boxcar are parked on a storage track at the west end of the yard.

Title:  903 Enters Gilroy
Description:  The crew of Caltrain 903 waves as the engine rumbles into Gilroy. Caltrain 903 is the third of 20 F40PH-2s the state of California purchased in 1985 for Peninsula Commute service, and one of 5 units that retained a gear-driven HEP system when the fleet was overhauled in the late 90s. According to various sources, 903 has been renown for its spotty mechanical history, and was even reported as retired by some sources. However, 903 is clearly still alive and kicking as of August, although its days are numbered with the inevitable influx of new equipment.

Coast Starlight Southbound
Title:  Coast Starlight Southbound
Description:  Amtrak 167 glides into Salinas with the southbound Coast Starlight at 12:02 PM. 167 is running on time today, not always common for the Starlight. Salinas is the first stop after the crew change at San Jose. From here, busses can carry passengers west to Monterey. There is usually a 10-12 minute layover in Salinas for passengers to stretch their legs. 167 will be delayed for an additional 20 minutes here, departing at 12:35 PM. Note the Rio Grande hoppers on the right.
